All children are taught the requirements of the National Curriculum. THE FOUNDATION STAGEReception and Nursery make up the Foundation Stage and, as such, follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum. This is divided into six areas of learning: · Personal, Social and Emotional Development · Communication, Language and Literacy · Mathematical Development · Knowledge and Understanding of the World · Physical Development · Creative Development This important stage prepares children for Year 1 and later for Year 2. Emergent reading, writing and numeracy skills are developed, and pupils are encouraged to work together, enhance their social skills and develop a love of learning.
KEY STAGES 1 AND 2EnglishThe school follows the Primary Strategy. At Key Stage 1 the main focus is on teaching reading and writing skills. Pupils are encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills and to practise their handwriting. Daily English lessons are taught in every class and as pupils progress into Key Stage 2 a greater emphasis is given to writing at length for a range of purposes. MathematicsThe school follows the Primary Strategy. As pupils progress through the school the time spent on numeracy increases. All pupils cover work on number, shape, space and measures, handling data and problem solving. Pupils are encouraged to learn their tables and spend time each day on mental calculation. Science
The school follows the National Curriculum on the teaching of science and places emphasis on learning in a practical way. Children are taught to use appropriate scientific vocabulary with accuracy and confidence. They learn to observe closely and to plan, carry out and record a wide range of investigations during their time in school. Pupils are taught about:
Information and Communication TechnologyThe school follows the National Curriculum and has a networked computer suite which all classes, from Nursery to Year 6, are timetabled to use for regular weekly lessons. There is also a computer workstation in the library, which pupils are able to use in their library periods, and all classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and computers. There are additional interactive computer whiteboards in the Foundation Stage shared area and computer suites. The older children have regular access to a bank of laptops which are frequently used to support learning in everyday lessons.
