Foundation Subjects All pupils are taught the National Curriculum Foundation Subjects of Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education. The school follows national guidelines for the planning and delivery of these subjects. Children also have the opportunity to learn to play the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn and guitar. PSHE and Citizenship Pupils’ spiritual, emotional, moral, social, health and cultural education are a priority at Hurst Primary School. All pupils receive regular lessons in religious education and the school ethos and culture promotes tolerance and understanding. We have established active links with a local residential home for the elderly and a centre for children who live on the streets in Romania. Sex Education
Sex education is covered as a natural extension of the science and health curriculum. Pupils’ questions are answered factually as they arise. Appropriate and responsible sex education is an important element in educating pupils to prepare for adult family life. Parents are key factors in helping their children to cope with the physical and emotional aspects of growing up and in preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities when sexual maturity begins. The teaching offered by schools is complementary and supportive to the role of parents and is carried out in consultation with them. In practical terms, sex education at the school will consist of a talk to both boys and girls in year five about health and personal hygiene. In year six all pupils take part in activities related to puberty and the girls are given a talk about menstruation by the school nurse. After the talks, the girls receive a booklet to take home to their parents. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these activities. Religious Worship and Instruction Religious affiliation: None, but there are informal links with local churches and religious communities and local clergy are invited to attend on a weekly basis. Arrangements for religious worship and instruction: Religious education is given in accordance with the Education Reform Act 1988: Religious Education and Collective Worship. Assemblies are held daily and these follow a broadly Christian content. Pupils are excused attendance at religious worship and/or religious education if parents request this. A parents’ Christian prayer group meets every half-term on a Monday from 9.30 until 10.00 a.m. in the small hall. All parents are welcome.
