Home Parents General Information
Homework

Homework is that work which is set outside the timetabled curriculum.  The purpose of homework at Hurst is:

·           to develop an effective partnership between the school and parents in pursuing the aims of the school

·           to consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding, particularly in literacy and numeracy

·           to help pupils gain independence by working away from the teacher

·           to extend school learning, for example, through additional reading

·           to encourage pupils as they get older to develop the confidence and self discipline needed to study

       on their own.

It is recognised that children participate in a wide range of out of school activities.  However, we are sure that parents will not want these activities to adversely affect the quality of their child’s homework.  We endeavour to make homework tasks meaningful and manageable rather than time-consuming.  Formal homework will not be set for the school holidays but older children may be given some revision or research tasks from time to time.

The role of the parent is:

  • to ensure that the set homework is done in a suitable environment, free of distractions

  • to support the child in the task giving help, advice, encouragement and praise (without doing it for them)

  • to encourage a more self-disciplined approach as the child grows older and more independent

  • to ensure the child completes the work on time and takes the completed work to school on the due date.

The role of the pupil is:

  • to pay full attention to the explanation given by the teacher, and to take the homework home promptly

  • to complete the set homework, to a good standard, and return the work to school on the due date

  • to work with increasing self-discipline and independence.

The role of the teacher is:

  • to set suitable homework regularly, in accordance with the school’s policy

  • to explain the homework task

  • to oversee the marking of homework and provide relevant feedback.

In some cases work will be collected and marked formally, but for many homework exercises, the teacher will go through the work with the class, during which time any misunderstandings can be addressed.  When this method is used, the children will mark their own work.  Homework books will be provided for each child – orange for Maths and dark blue for English.

The Set Homework

Throughout the school there will be occasional tasks such as research or practising of specific skills.  But there will be consistency across year groups regarding the duration and regularity of the set homework.

By the time children reach Year 6, they will be expected to work for about 2½ hours on the week’s homework.  This time recommendation includes reading (which should be every night) and the learning of words / rules for spelling tests.  Younger children will have shorter exercises and build up to the 2½ hour homework recommendation as they work through the school.

Nursery

In the Nursery parents choose books with their children at the end of each session.  Children share books with their parents every day and are encouraged to bring their book bag to school every day.

Reception to Year 2

Homework will range from predominately reading and sound work in Reception to reading, words / rules for spelling and a Maths activity in Year 2.  The learning of words for spelling tests will begin at the start of Year 1.  In Years 1 and 2 words will be sent home on Fridays and children will be tested the following Thursday.  Book bags should be returned on Wednesday.  All books will be changed and sent home on Friday.  The Year 2 Maths activity will be sent home on Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday.

Years 3 – 6

A Maths homework task will be given out on Wednesday and will be due in the following Monday.

An English homework task and list of spellings will be given out on Friday, due in the following Wednesday.

Teachers should record the handing in of each homework. Children’s failure to hand in homework on time will be noted and the parents informed.

Spelling Homework

Words will consist of a group of words up to a maximum of 10, that illustrate a spelling rule on which children will be tested.  Scores will be recorded by the teacher and also in the contact book for the parents’ information.

Reading Homework

Reading books should go home in the book bag, accompanied by the green reading record book.  Parents are encouraged to record when they read with younger children.  Older children should be reading independently at home.

The practicing of multiplication tables and number bonds at home should be encouraged and teachers may inform parents of a current class focus (eg a particular multiplication table) through the contact book.
