Harvest at Hurst

Our annual Harvest Assembly provides the children with an opportunity to express appreciation for the wide variety of foods and drinks they can enjoy and also think about people who lack a plentiful supply of food.

In last year’s Harvest Assembly we focused upon the care shown to vulnerable people by two charities.  We would like to continue this association in 2009.  The first of the charities is
St Mungo’s, which supports homeless people in many of the London boroughs.  One aspect of its work is to provide food in emergency night shelters and longer term hostels.  The other charity, based in Orpington, Kent, is Smile International.  We will be concentrating upon the efforts of a worker from the charity named John Matiza.

You will probably be aware of the continuing extreme hardship suffered by people in Zimbabwe where spiralling inflation, currently running at 4500%, and droughts have resulted in a major food crisis.  John is endeavouring to provide 1800 children with one decent meal each day.  Since last year he has been given a 4 x 4 vehicle.  He regularly drives this on a 20 hour round trip to Botswana to buy food and then transports it to four schools in Zimbabwe where meals are provided for the children.

In conjunction with our Harvest Assembly, which is to be held on Tuesday 6 October, we would like to invite you and the children to make a contribution to the cost of feeding homeless people in London and children in Zimbabwe.  The total amount collected will be divided equally between St Mungo’s and Smile International.  The money for Smile will go directly to the work of John Matiza in Zimbabwe.  I spoke to the children this morning about both charities.  We hope to have some pictures and information available on the school website very shortly.

Children should hand contributions to their class teacher in an envelope marked ‘Harvest 2009’.  They can do so from tomorrow onwards.  Contributions will be received from a representative from each class in our Harvest Assembly.  (Money can be brought to school after 6 October.  The final deadline will be Friday 16 October 2009).

We hope that despite the current economic climate, parents will feel able to be as generous as they were last year in supporting these good causes.
