DISCIPLINE AND SCHOOL RULES All pupils are encouraged to show a courteous and considerate attitude towards each other. Discipline is maintained in a positive manner but continual failure to adhere to school rules will result in the withdrawal of certain privileges. In the case of serious offences, pupils will be dealt with by the Head Teacher or Deputy Head Teacher and parents will be contacted if it is felt necessary. Bullying and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated at Hurst Primary School. SCHOOL MEALS AND MIDDAY SUPERVISION The school's policy is to provide supervision for all pupils wishing to remain on the school site throughout the midday break and take lunch, whether provided by the school meals service or brought by the pupils, and arrangements are made accordingly. A team of dedicated adult supervisors ensures the smooth running of the lunchtime arrangements. School meals are provided on a cafeteria basis and there is a daily choice of menu items; a non-meat item is always included. Dinner money should be brought to school on a Monday in a labelled container or envelope. Packed lunches must be brought to school in single, rigid, labelled, sealable containers. Drinks must be in non-breakable containers or waxed cartons, no glass bottles or cans are allowed. No carbonated drinks or sweets are allowed in school. Children may only change their eating arrangements at the end of each term. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES There are a number of clubs of a recreational nature across the school. These include those designed to improve skills in such games as netball, football, rugby, cricket and rounders and a variety of other clubs such as drama, dance and French. A reading club and a Bible club meet at lunchtime on a weekly basis. The school is increasing its instrumental music provision to offer as many pupils as possible the opportunity to play a musical instrument. Due to high demand it may not be possible to accommodate every applicant. CONTACT BOOKIn Key Stage 2 children receive a contact book, which should be used by parents to contact the teacher if a personal visit is not deemed necessary. The teacher may also use the book when there is a need to send information to the parents. This book should accompany the child to and from school each day. In Key Stage 1 and Reception, the reading record also serves as a contact book. THE HOUSE SYSTEM The school’s four houses are Blue, Green, Red and Yellow and pupils are allocated to one of these houses on admission. The house colour is reflected in book bags and PE shorts. All pupils are able to earn house points for good work or behaviour. These are recorded on class charts and are collected weekly. Each week the winning house is awarded the house cup, which is displayed by the House Captains in assemblies. SCHOOL COUNCIL A school council, with two representatives from each class in Key Stage 2, meets fortnightly to debate school matters under the direction of two members of staff. SCHOOL HEALTH A medical room is available where first aid can be administered throughout the day. A note will always be sent home should an injury occur which requires minor first aid treatment (eg a plaster). Parents will be contacted by telephone in the event of a more serious injury to a child. Every school has a named school nurse who advises on health related issues. The school nurse can be contacted at any time during your child's school life if there are health concerns. Contact details are available from the school office. The school nursing service undertakes a review of every child's health at school entry. A health questionnaire is sent home to parents to be completed to ensure any health concerns can be addressed. If a concern is identified the school nurse will contact the parents. As the majority of children are healthy and have been screened by the school nurse, very few parents will be contacted. However, it is recommended that every child be seen by the school nursing team to have height, weight, vision and hearing tested. This is routinely carried out without parents being present, although consent is requested and the results are sent home. The school is a no smoking zone for staff, parents and visitors.
