Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic." - J.K. Rowling

Welcome to our English curriculum page. At Hurst Primary, we understand the profound impact of English language skills in shaping young minds and preparing them for a lifetime of learning and exploration.

Our English curriculum is meticulously designed to instill a love for reading, phonics, and writing in every pupil. Through dynamic and engaging lessons, interactive activities, and innovative resources, we create an inspiring learning environment where students can discover the magic of language and literature.

Utilising the Twinkl Phonics program, we equip our youngest pupils with strong foundational skills in reading and spelling, setting them on a path towards literacy success.

We have also carefully curated a selection of key texts for each year group, chosen to reflect the diversity of our society and expose children to a myriad of genres, cultures, and perspectives. By immersing pupils in the world of words and fostering their creativity and expression through writing, we aim to ignite a lifelong love for English language and literature.

Reading Lists by Year Group

We have produced lists, by year groups, or fiction books that are generally appropriate in terms of reading level and difficulty for a child in each year group but this does not mean to say that children cannot read or have a book read to them from the list of a year group above or below.  These are just suggestions and obviously do not include every good book out there!  We hope you find the book suggestions useful.  Mr E Bisley, Assistant Head Teacher and English Lead
